9 Post-operative Recommendations for Implant Surgery

1. REST: Relax as much as possible after the operation. Sleep with your head elevated, for example by using two pillows. Please limit your physical activity and avoid any exercise or strenuous activities for 48 hours following the operation.

2. ICE PACK: Apply an ice pack to the surgical area for the first three hours after the operation. Follow a routine of applying the ice pack for 5 minutes, then resting for 5 minutes.

3. PAIN: You may experience some discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off. Do not take aspirin or any products containing acetylsalicylic acid. Take the medication prescribed by your dentist.

4. BLEEDING: A little bleeding is quite normal. If the bleeding is heavy, apply steady pressure with a damp tea bag (do not use any other type of tea) to the bleeding area for 30 minutes. If this is not enough and the bleeding continues, please call us.

MOUTHWASHES: Do not use any mouthwashes for at least 12 hours after the procedure. After this time, you may rinse with warm water and a teaspoon of salt. You may do this up to four times a day if it provides relief. Use the mouthwash prescribed on your prescription twice a day for one minute each time. The prescribed mouthwash is VERY IMPORTANT.

5. ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO: Avoid alcohol and tobacco completely for at least 48 hours after the operation.

6. ORAL HYGIENE: It is VERY IMPORTANT to keep the area as clean as possible, whether or not you have teeth. If you have natural teeth, start brushing the day after the operation, wetting the brush with lukewarm water first. When cleaning, try to avoid the gums and clean the surface of the tooth. Do not use toothpaste in that area. Clean the area a couple of times a day.

7. DIET: Avoid drinking anything hot for the first 6 hours after surgery. Avoid spicy, acidic or overly hard foods. Cold or hot foods may cause discomfort. Recommended foods include: broth, eggs, custard, soups, pudding, cooked pasta, tender fish, cooked vegetables, and any other food that does not require much chewing. If you can avoid chewing on the treated area, please do so. We recommend drinking ORANGE JUICE (VITAMIN C) STITCHES: If any of the stitches become loose, please do not pull on them. If they are causing you discomfort, please call us. You can view recipes for recommended post-implant surgery meals by clicking here.

8. REMOVABLE DENTURES: If you wear dentures, you should avoid using them for the first 15 days. You should visit your dentist so that they can adjust the dentures to suit your new situation.

9. PRESCRIPTIONS: Follow the instructions carefully; if you have any questions, please contact us. Check that you are not allergic to any of the prescribed medicines.
